Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus
- Yellow-headed Blackbirds feed, breed, and roost in freshwater wetlands that have emergent vegetation such as cattails, rushes, and tall reeds.
- They are aggressive towards Red-winged Blackbirds who share their habitat and will take over prime nesting areas.
- Yellow-headed Blackbirds are migratory and can be seen migrating in huge flocks at times.
- Yellow-headed Blackbirds eat insects in the summer and seeds during the colder months.
- The females and juveniles are less colorful than an adult male and they are brown instead of basically black.
- They lay 3 to 5 eggs and the incubation period is 11 to 13 days.
- Yellow-headed Blackbirds can live to be more than 11 years old.
