Willow Flycatcher Images and Information:
Empidonax traillii
- Willow Flycatchers are small flycatchers with brownish olive plumage, light colored bellies that may have a yellow wash, two light colored wing bars, and eye rings that are very light or nearly absent. Their bills are broad with pale lower mandibles.
- Willow Flycatchers are migratory. During the winter they spend time in the tropics, during the breeding season they can be found in habitats that include lakeshores, streams, swamps, riparian zones, and areas with stands of willows near running or standing water.
- Willow Flycatchers are insectivores that feed on insects in flight, by gleaning and also snatch them from the ground.
- Willow Flycatchers lay 2 to 4 eggs which hatch in 12 to 15 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
- A group of flycatchers can be called a “swatting”, “zapper”, “zipper” or and “outfield” of flycatchers.
- Willow Flycatchers can live to be more than 11 years of age.
