White-tailed Prairie Dog Images, Facts and Information:

Cynomys leucurus

  • White-tailed Prairie Dogs are small, stout, tan-brown rodents with short, white-tipped tails, large eyes, and they have a blackish brown cheek patch above and below each eye.
  • White-tailed Prairie Dogs are found across the western half of Wyoming, western Colorado, the eastern portion of Utah, and a small portion of southern Montana. White-tailed Prairie Dogs are generally found at altitudes ranging between 5,000 and 10,000 feet in desert grasslands and shrub grasslands. Sage is especially important as a form of cover.
  • White-tailed Prairie Dog populations have decreased dramatically, and the remaining population occupies only around 8% of their original range. It is subject to population controls by humans (shooting and poisoning), and threatened by a disease called Sylvatic Plague that can infect all prairie dogs.
  • White-tailed Prairie Dogs are herbivores, eating grasses and sedges.
  • White-tailed Prairie Dogs have 2 to 8 pups in a litter. Females nurse and tend to the young.
