  • Male Western Tanagers have yellow bodies, brilliant red heads with black backs, wings and tails. Females and juveniles are olive-green with yellow below.  Males, females and immature birds have two wing bars.
  • Western Tanagers are migratory.
  • Western Tanagers are found in the western U.S, and western Canada during their breeding season. During the nonbreeding season they are found in Mexico and Central America.
  • Western Tanagers prefer habitats that include mixed woodlands and coniferous forests.
  • Western Tanagers eats insects and berries.
  • Western Tanagers lay 3 to 5 eggs which hatch in 13 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of tanagers is called a “season” of tanagers.
  • Western Tanagers can live to be more than 6 years of age.
