• Virginia Opossums are medium-sized marsupials with grayish-white fur, black ears, pink noses, long hairless tails, and sharp claws. Males are slightly larger than females.
• Virginia Opossums are found throughout Central and North America, from Costa Rica to southern Ontario, Canada. They are common in the eastern United States and along the west coast.
• Virginia Opossums thrive in various habitats including woodlands, thickets, farmland, urban areas, and near water sources such as streams, swamps, and marshes.
• Virginia Opossums are omnivores and eat a wide variety of foods including small mammals, birds, insects, fruits, vegetables, carrion, and human food scraps.
• Virginia Opossums typically have 1-3 litters per year with 6-9 young per litter. The young remain in the mother’s pouch for about 2-3 months.
• Virginia Opossums are known for “playing possum,” feigning death when threatened.
• A group of opossums can be called a “passel” or “posse” of opossums.
• The oldest known Virginia Opossum in captivity lived to be 4 years old.
