Tundra Swan Images, Facts and Information:
Cygnus columbianus
- Tundra Swans have pure white plumage, black legs and feet and black bills often seen with yellow near the base. They are smaller than Trumpeter Swans, the other swan native to North America. Tundra Swans used to be called Whistling Swans in North America. Eurasian Tundra Swans are called Bewick’s.
- Tundra Swans primarily eat plant matter but will eat arthropods and mollusks including clams. During migration they will consume corn, soybeans, rice found in farmer’s fields and they will eat winter wheat, barley and rye sprouts.
- Tundra Swans breed in the northern tundra of Canada and Alaska where they nest near ponds, lakes and pools near river deltas. Tundra Swans lay 4 to 5 eggs which take 31 to 32 days to hatch. The female incubates. Tundra Swans are monogamous.
- A group of swans can be called a “bevy”, “drift”, “school”, “regatta” or “ballet” of swans
- A Tundra Swan can live up to 23 years.
