Three-toed Box Turtle Images, Facts and Information:
Terrapene carolina ssp. triunguis
- Three-toed Box Turtles are small terrestrial turtles with a domed shell, yellow or orange markings on their head and legs, and three toes on their hind feet. Males have a concave plastron (bottom shell) and longer, thicker tails than females.
- Three-toed Box Turtles are found in the central United States, from Illinois and Indiana south to Texas and Louisiana. They are non-migratory and spend their entire lives within a small area.
- Three-toed Box Turtles live in moist, wooded areas, prairies, pastures, and areas with sandy soil. They prefer areas with plenty of vegetation cover and a source of water nearby.
- Three-toed Box Turtles are omnivores, eating a variety of plants, insects, worms, slugs, snails, and carrion. They use their sharp beak-like jaws to tear apart food.
- Female Three-toed Box Turtles lay 3 to 8 eggs in a nest they dig in the soil. The eggs hatch in 70 to 80 days. Box turtles reach sexual maturity at around 10 years old.
- Three-toed Box Turtles can close their hinged plastron completely, protecting their head, legs and tail inside their shell. This is how they got their name.
- The oldest known Three-toed Box Turtle lived to be over 100 years old.
