- Summer Tanagers are medium-sized songbirds. Males are bright red all over, while females are olive-yellow. Both sexes have large, pale bills.
- Summer Tanagers breed in the southern and eastern United States and migrate to Central and South America for the winter.
- Summer Tanagers inhabit open deciduous or mixed woodlands, forest edges, orchards, and suburban areas with mature trees.
- Summer Tanagers eat insects, especially bees and wasps, as well as fruits and berries.
- Summer Tanagers lay 3 to 4 eggs which hatch in 11 to 12 days. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the young.
- A group of tanagers can be called a “season” of tanagers.
- The oldest known Summer Tanager was 11 years, 10 months old.
