  • Slaty Skimmer dragonflies are medium-sized dragonflies. Males have dark blue bodies, blackish heads, and dark eyes. Females have brownish abdomens with a darker stripe down their backs. Adults fly from June to August.
  • Slaty Skimmers are found in eastern United States and southern parts of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. They are active from June to October, with peak activity in July and August.
  • Slaty Skimmers inhabit a wide variety of aquatic environments including ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, swamps, marshes, and flooded meadows. They prefer still, vegetated, sunny waters.
  • Slaty Skimmers feed on small flying insects, which they catch in mid-air. Slaty Skimmers lay eggs near the edges of water bodies. The larvae, called naiads, develop underwater and feed on aquatic insects.
  • A group of dragonflies can be called a “cluster” or “swarm” of dragonflies.
