Limnodromus griseus

• Short-billed Dowitchers are medium sized shorebirds with long bills, long pale legs, tan to gray plumage with streaked heads and a rufous chest in breeding plumage. Their bills are slightly shorter than the Long-billed Dowitchers.
• Short-billed Dowitchers are migratory.
• Their preferred habitat for breeding is muskegs of taiga, bogs to rocky or sandy sea shorelines, marshes, swamps and grasslands. They prefer coastal saltwater tidal flats, salt marshes, fields and mudflats during their nonbreeding season.
• Short-billed Dowitchers eat insects, eggs of horseshoe and king crabs, aquatic invertebrates, snails and some seeds.
• They lay 4 eggs which take 21 days to hatch. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous. When the chicks hatch the female leaves and the males raises them.
• A group of sandpipers can be called a “fling”, “hill”, “bind”, “contradiction” or a “time-step” of sandpipers.
• Short-billed Dowitchers can live up to 20 years.
