Accipiter striatus

  • Sharp-shinned Hawks are small, long-legged, long-tailed, short-winged hawks with small heads. Adult Sharp-shinned Hawks have blue-gray upperparts, rufous barred chests, and dark red eyes.  Females are generally larger than males.
  • Some Sharp-shinned Hawks are migratory while others are year round residents in parts of their range.
  • Sharp-shinned Hawks can be found in Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.
  • Sharp-shinned Hawks are generally found in dense woods except during migration and winter.
  • Sharp-shinned Hawks primarily eat small birds but will also prey on small mammals, insects and reptiles.
  • Sharp-shinned Hawks lay 4 to 5 eggs which hatch in 34 to 35 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
