Semipalmated Plover Images, Facts and Information:
Charadrius semipalmatus
- Semipalmated Plovers are small shorebirds with short necks, yellowish legs, brown backs, white underparts with a single brown or black band on their chests.
- They are migratory. They breed in mossy or sandy tundra in northern Canada and Alaska.
- Semipalmated Plovers have been known to swim short distances.
- The preferred habitat of Semipalmated Plovers off of their breeding grounds includes mudflats, lake shores, salt marshes, tidal flats, coastal beaches, lagoons, and fields.
- Semipalmated Plovers eat mollusks, crustaceans and insects.
- Semipalmated Plovers lay 3 to 4 eggs which hatch in 23 to 25 days, both sexes incubate and they are monogamous.
- A group of plovers is called a “ponderance”, “deceit”, “congregation”, “brace” or a “wing” of plovers.
- Semipalmated Plovers can live up to 9 years.
