Say’s Phoebe Images, Facts and Information:

Sayornis saya

• Say’s Phoebes are medium-sized flycatchers with pale rufous bellies, gray-brown backs and heads with dark gray wings and tails.
• Say’s Phoebes are migratory. During the breeding season they can be found from parts of Mexico into Texas through the western U.S.  and all the way to Canada’s Yukon and central Alaska. There are resident populations in parts of the northern Mexico and parts of the U.S. southwest. They spend winters in coastal Oregon, California, east to Texas and most of Mexico.
• Say’s Phoebes prefer habitats that include open areas of sagebrush, badlands, dry barren foothills, canyons, desert areas, tundras, prairies and farmlands.
• Say’s Phoebes feed on insects and berries.
• Say’s Phoebes lay 3 to 7 eggs which hatch in 12 to 14 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
• A group of flycatchers can be called an “outfield”, “zapper”, “zipper” and “swatting” of flycatchers.
• Longevity is not well documented for Say’s Phoebes but there is documentation of a female Say’s Phoebe using the same nest for 5 years so I am going to say they live at least five years.
