Rufous Hummingbird Images and Information:

Selasphorus rufus

  • Rufous Hummingbirds are medium sized hummingbirds. The males are a bright rufous overall with white breasts, a red-orange gorget and green shoulders, their rufous tails are rounded with black edges. Females have green underparts with rufous sides and under tails, white breasts and bellies, gray and white throats with a red spot, and their tails are rufous, green and black with white tipped outer tail feathers. Juveniles resemble females but have white throats.
  • Rufous Hummingbirds are migratory. They breed from southeastern Alaska, southwestern Alberta, British Columbia, western Montana, south to Washington , Oregon, Idaho and northern California. They winter in Mexico and show up in small numbers along the Gulf Coast.  Rufous Hummingbirds prefer forests, high mountain meadows, riparian shrub, coasts and lowland streams.
  • Rufous Hummingbirds eat nectar, insects, spiders and will sip from sapsucker wells.
  • Rufous Hummingbirds lay 2 eggs which hatch in 12 to 14 days. Females incubate and they are polygamous.
  • A group of hummingbirds can be called a “tune”, “hover”, “shimmer”, or a “bouquet” of hummingbirds.
  • Rufous Hummingbirds can live to be at least 8 years of age.
