Redhead Images, Facts and Information:

Aythya americana

  • Redheads are medium sized diving ducks with rounded heads. Males have cinnamon colored heads, orange eyes, tricolored bills, black breasts and tails and gray bodies. Females and immature Redheads are mostly brown with dark eyes.
  • Redheads are migratory.
  • Redheads breed near potholes, small lakes, ponds, marshes and wetlands. During the winter they can be found in huge rafts in the Gulf of Mexico, they can also be found in large flocks in the southern tier of the U.S. in lakes, bays, rivers and reservoirs. They also winter in Mexico, the Caribbean, and along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
  • Redheads eat submerged aquatic plants, algae, tubers, rhizomes, small fish and invertebrates. During the winter they also feed on sea grasses, snails and clams.
  • Redheads lay 9 to 14 eggs which hatch in 23 to 29 days. The female incubates and they are monogamous. The females are also brood parasites and will lay their eggs in other redhead nests, other duck species nests and have even been observed laying their eggs in a Northern Harrier nest.
  • A group of ducks can be called a “raft”, “paddling”, “flush” or “brace” of ducks.
  • The oldest known Redhead was more than 20 years old.
