Melanerpes carolinus
- Red-bellied Woodpeckers are medium-sized woodpeckers commonly found in forests of the East. They have pale bodies with barred backs and gleaming red caps. Their red bellies are not usually very pronounced.
- Red-bellied Woodpeckers are nonmigratory. Red-bellied Woodpeckers are commonly found in forests, particularly in the Eastern United States. They are also known to visit wooded patches near residential areas.
- Red-bellied Woodpeckers primarily eat insects and other invertebrates, they have also been known to consume small birds, fish, frogs, and berries.
- Red-bellied Woodpeckers lay 3 to 8 eggs which hatch in 11 to 14 days. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous.
- A group of woodpeckers can be called a “drumming” or “descent” of woodpeckers.
- Red-bellied Woodpeckers can live to be more than 12 years of age.
