Purple Finch Images, Facts and Information:
Haemorhous purpureus
- Purple Finches are medium-sized finches with conical bills. Males have raspberry red heads, breasts, and backs, while females are brown with white underparts and dark streaks.
- Purple Finches are migratory birds. They breed across southern Canada, New England, and west coast regions of the United States, then travel south to overwinter in the eastern United States. Purple Finches inhabit coniferous and mixed forests, urban parks, orchards, hedgerows, and pastures with suitable trees or shrubs. They respond positively to forest patches with large amounts of edge.
- Purple Finches primarily eat seeds, berries, and insects. They are particularly fond of sunflower seeds, millet, and thistle.
- Purple Finches lay 4 to 6 greenish-blue eggs with brown or black speckles. The eggs hatch after about 13 days, and the young can fly in another 13 to 16 days.
- Purple Finches are often confused with House Finches, which have displaced them from some breeding habitats in the Eastern United States.
- A group of finches can be called a “charm” or “trembling” of finches.
- The oldest known Purple Finch was at least 14 years old.
