Muskrat Images, Facts and Information:
Ondatra zibethicus
- Muskrats have large heads, small ears and eyes, short legs with large feet, brown fur, and long tails that have scales instead of fur. They are members of the rodent family.
- Muskrats can be found from northern North America down to Mexico in swamps, marshes, wetlands, ponds, lakes, streams and creeks.
- Muskrats are excellent swimmers and can stay submerged for 20 minutes.
- Muskrats primarily consume cattails, grasses, roots and stalks of aquatic vegetation and they will also eat mussels, snails, crustaceans, fish and salamanders.
- Muskrats can have as many as three litters per year with 6 to 7 young per litter. Their young are called kits.
- Muskrats live 3 to 5 years in the wild.
