Moose Images, Facts and Information:
Alces alces
- Moose are the largest and heaviest member of the deer family, males can weight in at between 900 to 1,500 pounds, females between 700 to 1,100 pounds. Moose have long slender legs, dark brown fur, high humped shoulders, large muzzles and ears and both sexes have dewlaps which are also called beards or bells. Bull Moose have broad, palm shaped antlers which are shed annually.
- Moose eat both terrestrial and aquatic vegetation.
- Moose can be found in spruce forests, swamps, aspen and willow thickets. Moose can be found in most of Canada, Alaska, from Maine, Minnesota and Isle Royale in Lake Superior to the west in the Rocky Mountains.
- Moose usually give birth to one calf but they can also have two or three. The females do all of the rearing of the young.
- Moose can live to be 20 years of age or more.
