Neotamias minimus
- Least Chipmunks are North America’s smallest member of the chipmunk family. Least Chipmunk coloration varies according to region. Least Chipmunks have three dark and two light stripes on their faces and five dark and four light stripes on their backs with the central stripe running all the way to the tail.
- Least Chipmunks can be found in much of the western U.S. and north-western to north central Canada.
- Least Chipmunk habitats include coniferous forests, alpine meadows, piney woods, rocky cliffs, tundra, sagebrush, sand dunes, and open forest areas.
- Least Chipmunks eat acorns, seeds, leaves, berries, flowers, insects, fruits, grasses, fungi and some invertebrates. They store food in their burrows.
- Least Chipmunks do not hibernate during the winter. Instead, they survive the winter by entering torpor for long stretches of time
- They have 3 to 6 young per litter. Their young are called pups.
