Horned Passalus Beetle Images, Facts and Information:
Odontotaenius disjunctus
- Horned Passalus Beetle, also known as the Betsy Beetle, is a widely distributed beetle that is easily recognizable due to its size and appearance. Adult beetles are up to 1-3/8 inches long, shining black with a series of grooves running the length of the wing covers and a short horn on the front of the head between the eyes. Golden hairs can be seen lining the middle pair of legs, pronotum, and antennae.
- Horned Passalus Beetles live in colonies in galleries (tunnels) in decaying logs and stumps, often in large numbers. They are found in deciduous woodlands over much of North America east of the Great Plains.
- Horned Passalus Beetles are saproxylic beetles, meaning that wood forms a significant part of their diet.
