- Light morph Ferruginous Hawks have bright white underparts, pale gray heads, rusty upperparts and rusty feathered legs. Dark morph Ferruginous Hawks are mostly a rich, chocolatey brown.
- Ferruginous Hawks are short to medium distance migrants, some populations are year round residents.
- Ferruginous Hawks are the largest hawks found in North America. They are one of two species of North American buteos that have feathered legs all the way to their toes.
- They inhabit low elevation, open areas in the western United States and some locations in southwestern Canada in open grasslands, sagebrush steppe, deserts and saltbush-greasewood shrublands.
- Ferruginous Hawks prey on rabbits, hares, prairie dogs, ground squirrels and when those prey items are scarce they will also eat fledgling birds, reptiles and amphibians.
- Ferruginous Hawks lay 1 to 8 eggs which hatch in 28 to 33 days. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous.
- A group of hawks can be called a “tower”, “knot”, “spiraling”, “stream” or “kettle” of hawks.
- Ferruginous Hawks can live up to 20 years.
