Elk Images, Facts and Information:
Cervus canadensis
- Elk are large members of the deer family that are also called Wapiti. Male Elk have large antlers that can grow as much as four feet above their heads. Female Elk do not have antlers.
- Elk prefer woodlands for habitat. They are most active during mornings and evenings. Elk herds can number in the hundreds in some locations.
- Elk are herbivores that eat grasses during the summer and woody growth in the winter months.
- Female Elk usually only have one calf per season.
- Elk live 10 to 13 years on average.
