Eastern Kingbird Images and Information:
Tyrannus tyrannus
- Eastern Kingbirds are blackish on top, white below, they have large heads with dark caps and white chins with short, straight bills.
- Eastern Kingbirds are “tyrants” and will attack much larger birds that come near their nests.
- Eastern Kingbirds are migratory and contrary to their name their range extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific in North America. They spend winters in South America.
- Eastern Kingbirds preferred habitats include overgrown fields, forest edges, open areas with scattered shrubs or trees, urban environments including golf courses and parks and areas near water with overhanging trees.
- Eastern Kingbirds eat insects on their breeding grounds and on their wintering grounds they primarily eat fruits.
- Eastern Kingbirds lay 3 to 5 eggs which hatch in 16 to 18 days. The female incubates and they are monogamous.
- A group of kingbirds can be called a “court”, “tyranny” or “coronation” of kingbirds.
- Eastern Kingbirds can live up to 10 years.
