Sciurus carolinensis
- Eastern Gray Squirrels are medium-sized tree squirrels with predominantly gray fur, although they can also appear brownish or black. They have a white or light gray belly and a large bushy tail.
- Eastern Gray Squirrels are native to eastern North America, ranging from southern Quebec, New Brunswick, and Ontario to Florida, and west to eastern Texas. They have been introduced to various locations outside their native range, including parts of western North America and Europe.
- Eastern Gray Squirrels inhabit mixed hardwood forests and are commonly found in suburban and urban areas. They prefer areas with oak, hickory, beech, and maple trees.
- Eastern Gray Squirrels are omnivores. Their diet mainly consists of seeds, nuts, and berries, such as acorns, hickory nuts, and walnuts. They also eat buds, insects, bird eggs, and occasionally small birds.
- Eastern Gray Squirrels breed twice a year, from December to February and May to June. Females can have litters of 2 to 6 young, which are born hairless and helpless. The young are weaned in about 50 days.
- Eastern Gray Squirrels are known for their role in seed dispersal. They bury nuts and seeds, some of which they forget, allowing them to sprout and grow into new plants.
- A group of squirrels can be called a “scurry” or “dray”.
- Eastern Gray Squirrels are active during the day and do not hibernate. They are often seen foraging for food throughout the year, even in winter.
- The oldest known wild Eastern Gray Squirrel lived up to 13 years, although most live around 3 years in the wild.
