Aphonopelma iodius
- Desert Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders that are primarily black, brown and tan in coloration.
- Desert Tarantulas are found in the deserts of California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
- Desert Tarantulas create webbed burrows and they often obstruct the entrance to their burrows with a silken or silk and dirt plug to protect against heat and predators.
- Desert Tarantulas eat beetles, other spiders, arthropods and small lizards.
- Desert Tarantulas are long lived spiders and they don’t reach sexual maturity until they are 8 to 12 years old. Females can live up to 25 years.
