Cliff Swallow Images and Information:

Petrochelidon pyrrhonota

  • Cliff Swallows have metallic blue bodies, rufous rumps and chins, a white crown, short legs and medium length, squared tails.
  • Cliff Swallows feed while in flight and consume flies, beetles, ants, butterflies, midges, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, crickets, damselflies, mayflies, lacewings, wasps and bees.
  • They are migratory and can be found throughout much of North America.
  • Cliff Swallows prefer habitats that include open areas near lakes, ponds, marshes, canyons, foothills, river valleys, fields, parks and meadows. These areas must have structures or cliffs for them to nest in the area.
  • Cliff Swallows lay 1 to 6 eggs which take 14 to 16 days to hatch. Both Sexes incubate and they are monogamous, colonial nesters.
  • A group of swallows is called a “kettle” of swallows.
  • Cliff Swallows can live up to 11 years.
