Spatula cyanoptera
- Cinnamon Teals are small dabbling ducks, males in breeding plumage are a deep reddish-brown and have red eyes, the females are a plainer, warm brown.
- Cinnamon Teals are common in the western U.S. and southwestern Canada and considered rare in the eastern U.S. Cinnamon Teals also have a breeding population in South America.
- Both males and female Cinnamon Teals have light blue patches on front of wing which are visible in flight.
- Cinnamon Teal feed on aquatic vegetation, seeds, insects (both aquatic and semi-terrestrial), snail and plankton.
- Cinnamon Teal have separate breeding populations in North and South America making it the only duck species in the world to have that distinction.
- A group of Cinnamon Teal is known as a “seasoning”.
- They lay 9 to 12 eggs and the incubation period is 21 to 25 days. They are monogamous.
- Cinnamon Teals can live to be more than 10 years of age.
