Carolina Wren Images, Facts and Information:

Thryothorus ludovicianus

  • Carolina Wrens are small, chunky songbirds with a rich, reddish-brown upper body, buffy-orange underparts, a distinctive white eyebrow stripe, and a slightly curved bill. Males and females are similar in appearance.
  • Carolina Wrens are primarily resident birds, meaning they do not migrate. They are found year-round in the eastern United States, from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf Coast, and from the Atlantic coast to parts of the central U.S.
  • Carolina Wrens thrive in a variety of habitats including forests, swamps, suburban gardens, and brushy areas. They prefer areas with dense vegetation and plenty of cover.
  • Carolina Wrens eat insects, spiders, and other invertebrates. They also consume some fruit and seeds, especially in winter.
  • Carolina Wrens lay 3 to 7 eggs which hatch in about 12 to 16 days. Both parents share in feeding the young, and they are monogamous.
  • A group of wrens can be called a “herd” or a “chime” of wrens.
  • The oldest known Carolina Wren was 7 years and 8 months old.
