Canada Geese Images, Facts and Information:
Branta canadensis
- Canada Geese are large waterfowl with black necks, brown bodies, large, black webbed feet, black heads, white chinstraps and black bills. Males are slightly larger than females.
- Canada Geese are year round residents to long distance migrators. Canada Geese are year round residents in the northern half of the U.S., some populations breed into Canada and Alaska. Some migratory populations winter in the southern half of the U.S. and Mexico.
- Canada Geese thrive in many habitats including near lakes, ponds, marshes, bays, city parks, golf courses, reservoirs, grain fields, airports and areas with expansive grassy areas.
- Canada Geese eat grasses, underwater vegetation, grains, beans, rice, corn, and some berries.
- Canada Geese lay 4 to 8 eggs which hatch in 25 to 30 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
- Canada Geese are often called “Honkers”.
- A group of geese can be called a “string”, “plump”, “knot”, “chevron”, “gaggle” or “blizzard” of geese.
- The oldest known Canada Goose was 33 years old.
