Cackling Geese Images, Facts and Information:
Branta hutchinsii
- Cackling Geese look like miniature Canada Geese but they have rounder heads and short, stubby bills and smaller bodies. There are four races of Cackling Geese with slight differences in plumage and general size. Sexes are similar although males are usually larger.
- Cackling Geese are migratory.
- Cackling Geese breed in coastal areas of northern Canada and Alaska in a variety of tundra habitats. Cackling Geese winter from British Columbia south to California, Mexico, the Midwest, Great Plains, Great Basin, New Mexico, eastern Colorado, and east to Illinois.
- Cackling Geese eat agricultural crops, grasses, sedges, berries and aquatic plants.
- Cackling Geese lay 2 to 8 eggs which hatch in 25 to 30 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
- A group of geese can be called a “string”, “plump”, “knot”, “chevron”, “gaggle” or “blizzard” of geese.
- Cackling Geese can live to be more than 22 years of age.
