Icterus bullockii

  • Bullock’s Orioles are medium-sized orioles. Males are mostly bright orange with black crowns, eyelines, throat stripes, back and central tails, their wings are black with large white patches. Females and juveniles have yellow heads and throats , buff underparts and grayish upperparts.
  • Bullock’s Orioles are migratory. They breed from southern British Columbia and Alberta south to southern California and northern Mexico, east to the Dakotas and Texas. Bullock’s Orioles spend winters in the tropics, from central Mexico south. They prefer habitats with mixed deciduous woodlands, parks, towns, shade trees and riparian woodlands.
  • Bullock’s Orioles eat insects, fruits, seeds and berries.
  • Bullock’s Orioles lay 4 to 5 eggs which hatch in 12 to 14days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of orioles can be called a “split” or pitch” of orioles.
  • Bullock’s Orioles can live to be more than 8 years of age.
