Bufflehead Images, Facts and Information:
Bucephala albeola
- Buffleheads are small diving ducks. Males in breeding plumage are mostly white with glossy green-black to purple-black iridescent heads and backs. Their heads have a large white patch behind their eyes. Females have dark brown heads with an white oval shaped path below and behind their eyes.
- Buffleheads are migratory. Buffleheads breed in Alaska and Canada east to Quebec and south to Washington, California and Montana. Buffleheads spend winters along the Atlantic south to northern Florida and across the southern U.S. and into Mexico.
- Their preferred habitats include lake, ponds, saltwater bays and estuaries.
- Buffleheads eat crustaceans, insects, mollusks and seeds.
- Buffleheads lay 8 to 10 eggs which hatch in 28 to 33 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
- A group of ducks can be called a “raft”, “paddling”, “flush” or “brace” of ducks.
- Buffleheads can live to be more than 18 years old.
