Blue Jay Images, Facts and Information:

  • Blue Jays are medium-sized jays with bright blue upperparts, pale gray underparts, with distinctive head crests and have necks surrounded by a black necklace. They have black barred wings and their tails have white patches. Sexes are similar.
  • Some Blue Jays are migratory and some are year round residents in their range. They are primarily found east of the Rockies from southern Canada south to the Gulf of Mexico. They are slowly expanding westward. Preferred habitats include farmlands, evergreen forests, groves and suburbs.
  • Blue Jays feed on nuts, fruits, insects, seeds, frogs, mice, young birds and eggs.
  • Blue Jays lay 3 to 7 eggs which hatch in 16 to 18 days. They are monogamous and both sexes incubate.
  • A group of jays can be called a “party”, “scold” or “band” of jays.
  • The oldest Blue Jay was at least 26 years, 11 months old when it was found dead after being caught in fishing gear.
