Barn Swallow Images and Information:
Hirundo rustica
- Barn Swallows are a deep cobalt blue above, rust below with darker throats, they have tiny bills and feet and long forked tails.
- Barn Swallows feed while in flight and consume flies, beetles, ants, butterflies, midges, mosquitoes, wasps and bees.
- They are migratory and can be found throughout much of North America.
- Barn Swallows prefer habitats that include open areas near lakes, ponds, marshes, beaches near coasts, fields, parks and meadows. These areas must have structures or cliffs for them to nest in the area.
- Barn Swallows lay 4 to 7 eggs which take 13 to 17 days to hatch. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous, colonial nesters.
- A group of barn swallows is called a “kettle” of swallows.
- Barn Swallows can live up to 8 years.
