American White Pelican Images, Facts and Information:
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos
- American White Pelicans are large, white waterbirds with black flight feathers and long bills that have pouches.
- American White Pelicans are migratory. During the breeding season they are found throughout the Midwest and Western U.S and into Canada. During the winter they can be seen in the southern U.S., Mexico and parts of Central America.
- During the breeding season American White Pelicans nest on inland freshwater lakes and hypersaline lakes. When nesting on hypersaline lakes such as the Great Salt Lake they have to fly long distances to provide food for their young. They winter in coastal areas.
- American White Pelicans are fish eaters but they will also consume salamanders, tadpoles and crayfish. American White Pelicans feed by dipping their bills into the water and scooping up prey in their bills.
- American White Pelicans lay 1 to 2 eggs which take 29 to 36 days to hatch. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous, colonial nesters.
- A group of pelicans can be called a “scoop”, “pod”, “pouch” or “squadron” of pelicans.
- The oldest known American White Pelican was at least 23 1/2 years old.
