Hyla cinerea
- American Green Tree Frogs are small amphibians with bright green bodies, white or cream-colored belly stripes, and large toe pads. They have smooth skin and prominent eyes.
- American Green Tree Frogs are found in the southeastern United States, from Delaware to central Texas, and north to southern Illinois. They are year-round residents in their range. American Green Tree Frogs inhabit various moist environments including swamps, marshes, ponds, lakes, and streams. They are often found in vegetation near water sources and can adapt to suburban areas with sufficient moisture.
- American Green Tree Frogs eat a variety of small insects including flies, mosquitoes, moths, and crickets. They may also consume smaller frogs and spiders.
- American Green Tree Frogs lay 100 to 400 eggs in small clusters attached to aquatic vegetation. The eggs hatch in about a week, and tadpoles metamorphose into froglets in 5 to 6 weeks.
- American Green Tree Frogs are also known as “Bell Frogs” due to their distinctive call that sounds like a cowbell.
- A group of frogs can be called an “army”, “colony”, or “knot” of frogs.
- The lifespan of American Green Tree Frogs in the wild is typically 2 to 5 years, but they can live longer in captivity.
