American Dipper Images, Facts and Information:
Cinclus mexicanus
- American Dippers are small, chunky, dark gray bodied birds with short cocked tails and white eyelids that flash when they blink. Their bills are legs are dark. Females are slight smaller than males.
- American Dippers are nonmigratory. They are found from central Alaska and the Yukon south throughout the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada and the Cascades as far south as Mexico and Panama. American Dippers are found in flowing streams in the mountains and less often next to mountain lakes and ponds.
- American Dippers eat fish, fish eggs, insects and insect larvae. They are the only aquatic songbird in North America.
- American Dippers lay 3 to 6 eggs which hatch in 13 to 17 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous. May be polygamous.
- A group of dippers can be called a “ladle” of dippers.
- American Dippers can live to be at least 8 years of age.
