Greetings from rain-soaked Arkansas, where even the ducks have started drawing up blueprints for houseboats. After days and days of rain—over seven inches in the gauge and counting—a strange and unexpected sight appeared: a puddle. But not just any puddle. A puddle where there was never a puddle before!
Spring rain puddle
I’m not talking about your run-of-the-mill sidewalk splash zone. This one had character. Grasses were poking up through the water like they were surprised, and the reflections of two trees stared back at me like, “Well, this is new.”
This mystery puddle showed up in a spot that’s never seen standing water, not even during a good soaking. I half expected it to whisper, “Don’t get used to me,” like it was some kind of rogue seasonal pond testing the limits of its career path.
Since it’s been far too wet to get out and photograph birds or wildlife, I’ve turned my lens toward this puddle and its odd little world. And I have to say, it didn’t disappoint.
Two trees mirrored in the water looked like they were quietly debating whether to grow gills. The puddle itself had that smug look of something that knew it shouldn’t exist but did anyway.
No birds, no deer, no squirrels—just me and a reflective, uninvited visitor that turned a soggy week into something unexpectedly amusing.
Here’s to hoping the rain lets up soon so I can return to photographing birds instead of aquatic landscapes!
So here’s to the small surprises that pop up when the weather keeps us grounded. May your boots stay dry and your puddles be photogenic.
Life is good.
Mia

Send some our way! Save the GSL is still a chant. I think we would rejoice in puddles but 7 inches would be a biblical flood for Utah!
To echo EC…we need rain too. Normally we average about 4″ per year in Southern Nevada. So far – this year – we’ve had 1/8th of an inch. On the other hand, getting Biblical amounts of rain ain’t no fun either. The weather has certainly been weird this year. Love your pic. I hope you can get outside soon…I’m anxious to see what new things pop up in your viewfinder. Thanks Mia. Stay dry.
I love this! I thought there was a sparrow at the top of the tree reflection. Beautiful photo even without a bird in it. I love taking pictures of reflections also. Thanks!
Send some of your rain this way. Please.
I often find puddles (a rare thing here) photogenic and love yours.
I commend you for looking at a puddle and imagining what was, and is. Most of us would have plowed through that simple little miracle of life without nano second of thought or contemplation. Awareness of the living, breathing world keeps us healthy in heart
And your puddle was photogenic!!!
