I’ve been delighted to see blooming Eastern Redbud this past week everywhere I’ve traveled in Arkansas and Oklahoma. It is great to see them flowering again.

By the time I left Utah last year and drove into Arkansas, the redbuds had finished blooming. The same thing happened when I traveled back home to Virginia in 2019 and 2023—the Eastern Redbuds had already finished blooming.
But here I am, in 2025, getting to enjoy seeing the redbuds in bloom once more.

Eastern Redbuds are in the pea family. I can see that by looking at the shape of the dark rose pink flowers.
They are native to North America and can grow to be over 30 feet tall in the right conditions.

The leaves of Eastern Redbuds are food for several species of moths and butterflies, so planting them is not only a joy because of their flowers, but also a benefit to insects—many of which are struggling to survive. Especially butterflies because their current populations are rapidly declining.

I’m very happy I took these photos of this Eastern Redbud in bloom. The last time I took photos of redbuds, I was still living in Florida, which seems like a lifetime ago. I guess I should dig up those images and add them to my galleries too!
Life is good.
