I still have a few more images to share from the recent snowstorm here in Arkansas, including these female and male Northern Cardinal photos in the snow.
The scarlet red feathers of the male cardinals seemed to glow against the pure white snow. Although the females are less dramatically colored, they also looked terrific against the thick blanket of snow on the ground.
These Northern Cardinal images were taken during the first two days of the snowstorm that left more than ten inches of snow in the yard.

I always enjoy seeing, listening to, and photographing Northern Cardinals. They remind me of my early childhood, my mom—who loved these “red birds”—and the hours I spent watching them in my Virginia garden.
Northern Cardinals are year-round residents here, and that makes me happy because I truly missed these birds while I lived in Utah.
It was wonderful to see the cardinals visit the seed feeders during the snowstorm. For me, it was a real pleasure and treat.
Life is good.

All of the photos were taken with the Canon R7 and Canon EF 100-400mm II. Focal length varied a little bit in some photos as did the shutter speed and exposure compensation.
What startlingly beautiful pics! I have to admit to being a bit wide-eyed when I saw these shots. These vivid studies of the Northern Cardinal are a testament to your ability to balance color, capture detail and put together wonderful compositions. Thanks Mia.
Living in California and Nevada, I’ve never seen these “Christmas Card” birds. Your photos of them against the snow are gorgeous.
Beyond beautiful. And I am still really appreciating your cooling photos. Thank you.
Gorgeous! I have a soft spot for cardinals and find the females especially attractive, even when compared to their flashier male counterparts.
Almost 20 years ago, one of my students gave me a small stained glass cardinal as a thank you for writing her some letters of recommendation. Still one of my most treasured mementos of my teaching career. It reminds me of her and her incredibly amazing classmates from my best year of teaching.
