My Clark’s Grebe photo graces the cover of the ABA’s Birding Magazine December 2024 edition, and I wanted to share the cover along with what I wrote about it.
ABA Birding Magazine – December 2024 – Clark’s Grebe cover
Photographed in the stunning marshes of the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in northern Utah, my Clark’s Grebe photo reflects the beauty of these remarkable birds and the rich biodiversity of their wetland home.
I had driven to the refuge in the wee hours of the morning, hoping to find some spring birds to photograph. I spent a marvelous, relaxing day with them, surrounded by the beauty and birdsong of the springtime marsh. This Clark’s Grebe pair and the photos I took of them were among the highlights of my day.
Ted Floyd, editor of ABA Birding magazine, asked me to write about the cover photo—my Orange-crowned Warbler image featured on the Table of Contents page—and how birding and bird photography enrich my life.
You can read what I wrote here.
I’ve been honored to have several of my photos featured on the covers and pages of the ABA’s Birding magazine. I’ve even written and co-written a few articles for Birding.
Each issue of Birding is packed with incredible information about birds, birding locations, bird identification, reviews of bird guides and books, and so much more.
Since becoming a member of the American Birding Association, I’ve expanded my knowledge of birds and bird behavior while connecting with birders and bird photographers of all ages. The ABA fosters a shared passion for birds and nature, encouraging everyone to explore and enjoy the wonders of birdwatching.
I’m always on the lookout for birds to photograph, observe, and learn more about. The more I learn, the more I want to know. I guess it’s easy to tell—I’m passionate about them.
Life is good.
Mia

I have been a member of ABA since I started Birdwatching seriously in 2009. I get their magazines and am always envious of the great photographers that contribute their photos to the articles. I have seen your photos before. Glad to see that your photo made the cover. PS – Ted is a good friend from ABA and he only lives a few miles NW of me.
Mia,
I have heard that a picture is worth a thousand words. You have such a command of expressing yourself in writing that the gap has narrowed significantly.
Congratulations on the photo and accompanying article.
