Happy Halloween! 🎃 Today, I’m sharing a black-and-white photo of a Common Raven calling out from a snowy mound with the Great Salt Lake stretched behind. Something about this scene feels like Halloween personified—mysterious, haunting, and just a bit wild.
Common Raven Calling Out Halloween Secrets
Ravens have always been creatures of folklore and legend, often seen as omens or messengers from the unknown. With their piercing eyes and that unforgettable call, they’ve earned their spot as Halloween icons.
It’s easy to see why people once thought these birds held secrets beyond our understanding.
But there’s more to ravens than myths; they’re incredibly smart. Ravens remember faces, especially those who’ve wronged—or helped—them.
If a raven takes a grudge, she or he may even pass it along to other ravens, warning them to steer clear of certain people. Quite the memory!
I can relate, I’ve got a pretty good memory myself. Let’s say I can recall more than a few bird species, names, and faces—some better than others. Maybe that’s part of why I admire ravens so much.
Here’s to this clever, darkly mysterious bird—a perfect match for Halloween!
Life is good.

Quoth the raven…”Nevermore”. Big, beautiful and brainy. Perfect for All Hallows eve. Thanks Mia.
Ravens are amazing , I saw a documentary on them once and they do remember faces and pass those images into their young. Simply an auspicious bird of mystery
Fabulous shot and perfect for today! There’s a conspiracy of ravens that hang out on our street and I love watching (and listening to) their antics. They have definite opinions regarding which neighbors to steer clear of and which to come hang out with. I feel very fortunate to be among the latter.
Happy Little Candy Day! 🎃👻

Stunning. Not least because I love ravens.
