I finally decided to share my best Scissor-tailed Flycatcher photos that I’ve taken since my move. I created a gallery and hope to get more photos of them soon.
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher adult at Sequoyah NWR – Nikon D500, f6.3, 1/2000, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
The first two photos were taken at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in April, in the wonderful company of my dear friend and fellow photographer, Steve Creek.
Scissor-tailed flycatchers had just barely arrived from their spring migration when I was there. They are incredibly beautiful birds with floopy flight patterns. I think their long tails have something to do with that floopiness.
Trying to get photos of them wasn’t easy. At all.
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher perched on a thin branch – Nikon D500, f6.3, 1/2000, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
I took these two images of the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, and I am happy with them. To be perfectly blunt, though, I haven’t gotten my dream shots of this flycatcher species yet.
The shots I want are closer, in flight, and landing with their tails and wings spread out. A woman can dream, right?
Tishomingo NWR Scissor-tailed Flycatcher – Nikon D500, f8, 1/2000, ISO 800, +1.0 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
My final Scissor-tailed Flycatcher photo today was taken at Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge in May. Two flycatchers were chasing each other low to the road when I drove up.
Both of them landed on what I believe were power lines and stayed there until after I drove away. I could see them chasing each other again in my rearview mirror!
These spectacular flycatchers show up where I live practically every day. I just can’t seem to get photos of them here, though. I’m going to keep trying for those dream shots.
Life is good.
Mia
My Scissor-tailed Flycatcher photos plus facts and information about this species are on this page, hopefully I will add more soon!
A woman SHOULD dream.
Cool looking bird. Love the pics…but looking forward to your dream shot. Since you see them frequently, I have a feeling you’ll get your pic fairly soon. Thanks Mia.
Neat birds, I did not know they had a patch of red on the wing. I hope you capture your dream shot!
Beauties, Mia. I have not seen those since I left Texas.
Lovely little bird
