This morning, I wanted to share a small selection of White-breasted Nuthatch photos I have taken since I arrived at my friend Steve Creek’s home in Arkansas.
So far, I have only photographed nuthatch males, or what may be a single male, in Steve’s yard this year. I am enjoying hearing these nuthatches, observing their behavior, and taking images of them when I can.

Steve and I are photographing these nuthatches in the morning while we sip coffee and talk about the birds in his garden from his deck. It is incredibly awesome to be able to wake up, simply walk out the door, and be able to photograph so many bird species without having to deal with traffic on the road. It’s amazing, actually.
Steve’s yard and garden attract lots of wonderful birds. Part of the reason for this is the presence of numerous native trees and shrubs in his yard. Additionally, his yard has some grass and what some people call weeds. It does not get watered, it gets whatever the clouds leave in the form of moisture. The “weeds” in the grass attract butterflies, crickets, grasshoppers, and other insects, many of which the birds here catch and eat.
The White-breasted Nuthatch, or nuthatches, is coming to Steve’s suet feeder. Fortunately for me, the background behind the suet feeder can vary due to light, my position on the deck, and the nuthatch’s position near the feeder.
I can get a glowing background, grass in the background, or a dark background depending on where I sit. Personally, I like all of the backgrounds I have gotten so far.
All of these images were taken with my Nikon D500 and my 500mm lens, with my 1.4x teleconverter attached. I will be sharing more White-breasted Nuthatch photos in the near future, but I want to share the other birds that I have been photographing here too.
Life is good.
Mia
