This morning, I am not feeling up to par, so I am sharing a single Common Loon photo that I took in April at my local pond. They are gorgeous birds.
Adult Common Loon checking me out – Nikon D500, tripod mounted, f7.1, 1/3200, ISO 500, +1.0 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
In April, the lakes and reservoirs high in the mountains where the loons usually show up during migration were all iced over. The loons showed up in numbers down lower in the valley which gave me and other photographers the opportunity to take close up images of them.
When I was a small girl I used to hear Common Loons on the lakes in Michigan.
I did hear these loons at my local pond calling but they were what I believe were aggressive or territorial calls.
Yesterday, on the Winter Solstice, I thought about these loons and some of the other birds I was lucky enough to see or photograph this year. Some were Eastern birds due to my extended trip to Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
If I start feeling better today I will try and work some posts up about them before we ring in the New Year.
I think the recent inversion invaded my head, I have sinus issues, sneezing, coughing, and a sinus headache. I’ll tough it out.
Life is good.

Beautiful bird. The loon’s reflection in the undulating water has a dreamlike quality to it. Thanks Mia.
Thank you for the great photos. I didn’t know they lived up to 30 yrs! How amazing.
Hope you feel better. Thanks again for all your efforts and great info etc.
I do love their coloring and how regal they look.
Feel better soon!

Beautiful photo, get well soon and Merry Christmas.
I saw my first common loon in Minnesota and was captured for life. Incredibly lovely bird and its sounds are so eerie and mesmerizing. I’ve seen a few on Jordanelle in the spring. Thanks Mia, great photos
Thank you for this charmer. I hope you are feeling much, much better soon.
The loons were so fun to see up close last year. Always love seeing your photos of them. Get well soon!

So sorry you are not feeling well! Hope it clears quickly. The loon is beautiful.-Jeri S.
I’m so glad you were able to do a post and with a loon, no less. I’m just over the sneezing, snorting & coughing. It really takes the energy away. Get well!
Love the reflection patterns on the waves. The Solstice bug hit me too. My “get up and go” got up and went!
