This morning, I’m sharing a Red-breasted Nuthatch photo taken in my yard in Utah, plus a White-breasted Nuthatch image taken in Steve Creek’s yard in Arkansas.

White-breasted Nuthatch in Arkansas
My dear friend and excellent wildlife photographer, Steve Creek’s yard in Arkansas, is an amazing place for birds. The tall native pines and understory oaks provide great habitat for the birds that visit his yard, including this White-breasted Nuthatch.
Typically, I heard these nuthatches in Steve’s yard before I could see them as I sat on his deck photographing birds. The nuthatches seemed to land at the top of the pines and work their way down the trunks.
I believe the nuthatches were making sure the Red-bellied Woodpeckers weren’t around before they flew into the feeder. The Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Tufted Titmice, nesting nearby, were a bit aggressive at the feeders.
It was so peaceful to sit on Steve’s deck in the morning, my coffee within easy reach, to observe and photograph the birds. His large yard is quiet, and although he lives in town, I felt like I was out in the country. That did me good, I feel most at home in the country, I probably always will.
Thanks again for your gracious hospitality, loving care, and sincere compassion, Creek. I was going through some emotionally troubled waters because of my mom being in hospice, you and Rosie gave me the safe harbor I needed.

Red-breasted Nuthatch in Utah
This Red-breasted Nuthatch was taken during the winter at home in Utah. The feeder was in the front yard. By removing one of the screens in my living room window, I could photograph birds from inside on snowy days when I didn’t want to be in the road with crazy drivers.
I was tickled that this nuthatch and other birds would fly into my feeders.
I love hearing both Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches’ calls. Their call just makes me smile. Getting photos of them are the sprinkles on my cupcakes.
Life is good.
Mia

Amazing how different the Nuthatches look. Both are beautiful. Thanks Mia.
Beautiful photo! I dearly miss them. We used to have them but after the neighbors and the church cut down all the big old pines they are not visiting my feeders anymore.
Both are so very beautiful. Thank you.
I have heard a White-breasted Nuthatch around my house since I moved in 11 years ago. I have yet to see it. But I am happy knowing it is there.
Didn’t realize—until this post—that there was such a thing as a Red-breasted Nuthatch!—Jeri S.
