Just a quick post this morning highlighting a young Eastern Bluebird photographed while foraging on the ground in my friend Steve Creek’s yard in Arkansas.
Young Eastern Bluebird foraging on the ground – Canon R7, f11, 1/1000, ISO 2500, -0.3 EV, Canon RF 800 mm, natural light
I felt fortunate to be able to take images of adult and young Eastern Bluebirds while I was visiting Steve. Steve has bluebird nest boxes in his large, wonderful yard but I believe this young bird hatched from somewhere else nearby. There were nesting bluebirds in one of Steve’s nest boxes but something killed the chicks in that nest box while I was there.
I was tickled though when I saw this juvenile foraging on the ground. The bluebird stopped moving long enough for me to take several images of it.
I see Western and Mountain Bluebirds in northern Utah but never Eastern. I have a few photos of an adult male Eastern Bluebird bathing in Arkansas that I hope to process soon and when I do I will be adding a new photo gallery for this species.
Seeing and photographing Eastern Bluebirds was a real treat for me and to be able to do that from Steve’s deck while drinking coffee and enjoying his company made it feel even better.
Life is good.

Love this pic. The eye contact is terrific. I must admit…I’ve never seen an Eastern Bluebird before this shot. Very interesting. Thanks Mia.
Echoing Marty. And glad that you got this respite.
Sounds wonderful. I love the speckled juvenile plumage.
Sorry to read about the chicks in Steve’s nesting box. Happy this little bluebird cutie seems to be doing so well. 💙
