This morning I am highlighting an American Lotus in bloom that I photographed yesterday in a slough at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.
American Lotus in bloom – Canon R7, f8, 1/1600, ISO 1000, -0.7 EV, Canon RF 100-500 mm at 428m, natural light
American Lotus, Nelumbo lutea, is a species of flowering plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. Common names include yellow lotus, water-chinquapin, and volée. It is native to North America.
There are several locations on the refuge where American Lotus grows and is abundant.
I hadn’t yet shared any of the wildflowers I have seen and photographed in Arkansas or Oklahoma and I thought I would feature the bloom of this aquatic plant. They are gorgeous.
In some spots on the refuge both lotus and waterlily are found. I haven’t seen any blooming waterlilies yet.
This particular lotus blossom was in the same area where I photographed the two White-tailed Deer does with the young fawn several days ago.
Life is good.

Wonderful composition. The subtle play of the colors is extraordinary. Thanks Mia.
Beautiful
Lovely. Looks like the bloom has a little friend that is sleeping among the petals. 💜
Gorgeous!
How beautiful. Thank you.
