I can’t pass up photographing mountain Mallard babies when I find their little fluffy selves on mountain creeks, streams, lakes, or reservoirs. I don’t even try to pass them by. These ducklings are just freaking adorable.
Mountain Mallard babies in a creek – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/500, ISO 800, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
It was almost a year ago when I found these Mallard ducklings floating on a creek high in the Wasatch Mountains. I suspect that the Mallards up there might have nested a bit later this year than in the previous few years because of the higher amount of snow we received this past winter.
Every time I see Mallard ducklings, I hope they will survive to adulthood. Although Mallards are a common duck species across most of North America, I still love them.
Maybe part of the reason is also that when I lived overseas I did not see Mallards and I missed them during those years.
I am hoping to see some Mallard babies again this year.
Life is good.

I’ve always loved Mallards. When the sunlight catches their colors just right, they are spectacular. And, looking at this future generation of Mallards is inspiring. Great shot Mia. Thanks.
Cuteness to the max.
Adorable fluff balls.
Yes they are cute. When walking my dogs along a creek path that runs thru my town would see them with their parents floating around them. Have not taken the walk about for many years. I too love the Mallard Ducks. Had a good rain last night and the creek banks are running high.
A covey of cute, Mia!
So cute! I’ll have to email you the pics I took of a female Mallard who decided to come to my house to visit a few days ago. She had shaken off her 3 boyfriends who usually accompany her and was waddling solo. 😉
They slay me every time. That’s a lovely photo. Soon you’ll be able to have some free time, I hope.
